College closed for snow, so here's the brief for Friday. Love from p.Quinnell xxx

SUSSEX COAST COLLEGE HASTINGS

Course: FdA Illustration
Level: 2

Module: Concepts and Ideologies into Practice.

Project: Alphabet

Date: Friday 8th January/Wednesday 13thJanuary 2010
Tutor: Peter Quinnell

Project Brief

Produce a graphic ‘alphabet’. This could be based on the conventional 26 letterforms in normal use, or use more obscure and interesting sources, like semaphore, phonetics, signing, flag codes, foreign alphabets etc; try to be as fresh and surprising in your interpretation as possible.

Also try to be original in your use of materials… don’t feel restricted to two dimensions - you can scan or photograph your artwork for final 2D rendering as an A3 chart/poster.

Considerations

I will be awarding high grades to work that is delightful, surprising, fresh, fashionable and exciting: If you submit a standard ‘a is for apple…’ type of thing, it had better be good.

This is quite a tight timescale, so you’ll have to work fast and positively to finish to deadline. Plan your ideas carefully to be sure they are achievable.

Timetable

DAY 1: Group discussion, thinking and planning in sketchbook, thorough research of possibilities in the library and internet. Record all ideas. Make experiments. You should have your idea sorted out by the end of the day, and made a start on artwork if possible. Remember to make your solution exciting and different…

DAY 2: Production. Make sure you have everything you need.

Finishing and crit. Give yourself enough time for printing.

Submission

A3 ‘alphabet’ chart/poster, with sketchbook showing alternative ideas and all material generated in the design and production process.

Crit: 3pm 13.1.10
