Jen Pringle completed the FdA Graphic Communication course last year and is now doing the top up degree. She is working as a graphic designer and has this live commission for anyone interested. You will need to come up with ideas which you could realize as roughs. I suggest you email these to Jen and hopefully based on feedback go to final artwork. Obviously time is limited but it would be pretty thrilling to see your work on that van outside college.
Here's Jen's brief together with suggested references and her email address:
As you know, as well as Uni I work for the local youth project Pulse Youth.
At the very last minute I've been debriefed by my manager to get help with redesigning the Pulse Health bus which you will have probably seen in the Hastings college grounds on a Thursday. The health bus is looking a little tired and we really need a proper redesign and I wondered if you would be interested in helping?
The bus is a mobile service bringing health services and advice to 16 to 25 year olds across Hastings and Rother. The bus has got a reputation as the 'Johnny' bus because yes, you can get free condoms, but it's much more than that. It's a handy drop-in that helps look after the wellbeing of 16 to 25 year olds across the county. Health areas that the Pulse Health bus cover are:
- Sexual Health
- Diet
- Fitness
- Smoking
- Substance Misuse
- Emotional Wellbeing
So what do Pulse need?
There's very little time on this unfortunately - we need designs submitted by Monday 4th January.
Designs need to be fresh, vibrant and represent 16 to 25 year olds lives today. It's very naff at the moment with typical cheesy images about health e.g. a giant condom which just isn't appealing to the generation we're talking to.
There are 3 sides of the bus that need redesigning: the left and right hand sides and the rear. Attached are some shots of the bus. I'm afraid we do not have dimensions but we're simply after concepts that are designed to the approximate proportions of the bus. So for example the right and left hand sides are rectangular and the rear is roughly a square. Please also take into consideration the windows and doors with your design.
With the design, please consider what appeals to you as someone between the age of 16 to 25. What would make you consider stepping on the bus? At the same time, the design should not look to exclude any particular types of people e.g. anything too skaterboy could put off other groups of young people, so the design needs to appeal to everyone.
Here's some inspiration to get you thinking:
In terms of branding, the bus is owned by the Pulse project and not Pulse Youth (I'll send you the logo for this separately as it's on my mac at home). The prominence of this logo need only be small as we want the focus to be in attracting young people with a bright and inspiring exterior.
What's in it for me?
The chosen design will be professionally applied to the health bus which is an amazing opportunity for portfolios, plus I've managed to wangle a £20 voucher out of my manager which we can get from a retailer of your choice.
Feel free to invite friends to enter. And please don't hesitate in contacting me with any questions.
All the best,
Jen Pringle
